In 1965 when Tony Roy opened a private consulting practice, he was drawing upon nearly two decades of training practical experience. His interest in engineering had been sparked during his studies at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with a physics major in 1951. Next he was awarded his Bachelor of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering as well as winning the Alumni Medal and Athlone Fellowship from Technical University of Nova Scotia where in 1954.
Thus armed, he widened his horizons for breadth of experience by becoming a student engineer in England at C.A. Parsons & Company Ltd. Steam Turbines Heaton Works, at Newcastle upon Tyne. Obtaining his Certification of Apprenticeship, in 1956 he was awarded his Master of Science degree in thermodynamics and related studies by the University of Birmingham, England.
Returning to Canada, he worked on the design of new pulp mills in the Administration Engineering Department at Price Brothers Ltd., Paper Mill in Kenogami, Quebec, 1957 - 58. Gravitating toward Antigonish, he returned to his almamater as an assistant professor of engineering a consultant for the university.
To gain further experience he took charge of mechanical and electrical engineering for Lemieus, Tetrault & Associates in Montreal from 1962 - 64, with responsibility for the general engineering design of building systems, pollution control etc.
In 1965 Tony Roy opened the doors of his own company, A.H. Roy & Associates Ltd., serving as president and chief executive officer of this multi-disciplined consulting engineering firm. A.H. Roy & Associates Ltd. has contributed its expertise and knowledge to the design and supervision of over 1200 projects in the industrial, institutional, commercial, recreational, educational, health care and municipal fields.
Sadly Tony Roy passed away on January 23, 2004. Tony’s influence is still felt at A.H. Roy and Associates Ltd. The business model he laid out is still followed, and the majority of the current A.H. Roy employees worked personally with Tony enabling them to learn from his vast experience.
